CIVIL DEFENSE
The Russians are coming.. Put on your helmet and your armband and test
out your flashlight. It's time to check the
neighborhood for blackout compliance.."PUT
OUT THAT LIGHT, A BOMBER CAN SEE IT FROM 40
MILES" And don't forget the Gieger counter
you had down in the bombshelter. DO you need any reminders of
that time of national paranoia?
From the first block wardens of the 40's, we built our fear of invasion
and added to our toys. We had rubber and steel and grease drives (everyone
saved their cooking grease to make ammunition). Every company treasured
the E pennant for war production.. My dad's was a PT Boat. How many people
remember the ration stamps for food and red and blue points (coins the
size of pennies) to buy meat.
Bomb Shelters: Many people dug bomb shelters in
their back yards. They stocked them with food, water and medicine to be
able to outlast the radiation and destruction raging above their heads.
It was a standing joke, and a reality of the times that if it happened
only certain people would be allowed into the shelters. That way, when
the war was over, they could come up out of the ground and enjoy all the
other people just like them. Imagine a world of people who felt it their duty to lock the shelter door on their neighbors and friends?
